Monthly Reflection: Seven of Cups & The Devil
January Reflection - Seven of Moons (Cups)
Hooray - we made it through January! We often feel like this is the slowest month of the year, but surprisingly, talking to clients and friends, it feels like the pace has been picked up as we’ve entered into 2026 - and I have certainly felt this myself too!
Chaotic and hectic, these are the two words I’ve heard others (and myself) say over and over again since the start of the year, which is why the Seven of Moons is no surprise.
In this card, we’re looking at what’s in front of us and we don’t really know what to do with it. Ultimately, this can cause apprehension, procrastination and overwhelm, and we can see this in the hesitation of the hand in the image.
Deck: The Wandering Moon Tarot
Perhaps we have multiple options and we don’t know which way to go. This isn’t a case of having to make a clear cut decision, this isn’t big stuff. I’s the small things. It’s when we have a to-do list as long as our arm, and we don’t know which task to start with. It’s when we have 1000 creative ideas, so it’s impossible to discern which ones have potential and which don’t. It’s thinking about the next step in your business and not knowing which one is right for you. It’s trying to juggle more social commitments than you can plausibly fit into your diary.
Or maybe we’re trying to look ahead into the future and it all just feels really murky. Perhaps you’ve got the opportunity to do something that could lead to really incredible stuff, but you have no real idea of what it looks like for you to get from A to B.
Or maybe there’s something that looks really great now, but you have no idea where it would take you beyond tomorrow.
Essentially, we’re looking at what’s in front of us and going, “Is this a good idea or a bad idea? I have no idea!”
This card is all about learning to discern fantasy from reality, which seems impossible if we’re feeling like we don’t have all the pieces to the puzzle.
But it’s actually a lot more possible than you think…
Cups cards are all about things that have great meaning to us. This is about depth and substance. And let’s face it, fantastical offerings and promises are particularly lacking in this area.
When we see this card, seeking more information is the wrong approach. We need to get more in touch with what it is we truly want. We need to assess what feels most in alignment. What feels intuitively right.
Note, I didn’t say what feels ‘good’. There is a difference. Fantastical promises can sound great and feel amazing. But they don’t feel right. You don’t feel it in your bones.
Your soul doesn’t light up, your ego does.
In that sense, January was an opportunity to find clarity, and to better understand what aligns and what doesn’t. It was an invitation to discern what truly matters. What truly feels right. What is in alignment. So we could drown out the noise, reduce the chaos, and move into February with momentum and focus rather than scattered, chaotic energy.
And with our next card, we’re going to need that focused momentum…
February Outlook - The Devil
How we handle the energy of this card depends how we dealt with that Seven of Moons.
If we’re entering February driven by ego, seduced by fantasy, The Devil is asking us to really assess the decisions we’ve made. For example, this is when you take the job that promised you more money and a fast track to promotion, but neglected to mention that you’d be expected to work weekends. This is when we date the super hot guy who you had nothing in common with, only to find out that he’s an arrogant asshole.
We’ve chased what we thought was important, only to be given a harsh reality check as to what actually matters - and The Devil offers us an opportunity to course correct.
While this sounds difficult, it’s incredibly positive to see it follow that Seven of Moons. We have an opportunity to rectify any decisions that we were uncertain of before we walk further down the path.
But I firmly believe that a lot of us were capable of utilising our discernment in January. So if we’ve done that, what The Devil is up now? (pun intended)
Well, the better you get at living in alignment with your truest self, the more obvious it becomes when something is not in alignment. And so those ‘Devilish’ things in your life - the toxic patterns, the behaviours, the relationships - it all becomes abundantly clear.
This is a glass shattering moment. We see behind the curtain, The Devil is unmasked, and now we can’t unsee the truth.
And so we have an opportunity here to eliminate some things that aren’t working in our lives. Maybe we’re finally motivated to break a problematic habit. Maybe we’re leaving a relationship behind that has been causing us pain for a long time. Or maybe we’ve headed down a career or business path that has taken us on a long detour from where we started (and where we wanted to go).
In February, we see these things for what they are, so we can finally do something about it, enabling us to live more authentically, more meaningfully, and more freely.
What’s particularly interesting is that this coincides with the ending of the Year of The Snake (February 16th), a year of shedding, releasing and clearing. Anything that hasn’t yet been shed is being brought into the light, giving you one last opportunity to let it go, so you can take advantage of the momentum of the Year of The Horse.
January has given you the gift of discernment, and this month, you have the opportunity to use it again - this time with even more impact.
February is a month of liberation and you have the keys to set yourself free.
